Buying land is one of the biggest purchases most families make. These five checks reduce your risk.
1. Confirm the seller. Ask for a copy of the title deed or allotment letter and match it to the seller's ID.
2. Do an official search. Your lawyer can check the register at the lands registry to confirm ownership and see any charges or disputes.
3. Visit the plot. Walk the land, find the beacons and check the access road, water and power.
4. Check the survey. The size on the ground should match the size on the documents.
5. Use a lawyer for the sale agreement and transfer, and pay only through traceable channels.
